Fred Buckman, Sr., brings expansive experience in the electric power industry and a record of innovation to his role as Powerlink’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Buckman is the co-founder of Trans-Elect, the first independent electric power transmission company in the U.S., which he led as Chairman from 1999 to 2006.
Prior to co-founding Powerlink, Buckman was President of the Power Group, a division of The Shaw Group Inc., a global provider of engineering, design, construction, and maintenance services to government and private-sector clients in the energy, environmental, infrastructure markets. From 2007 to 2009, Buckman was Managing Partner, Utilities, of Brookfield Asset Management, a global private equity investment firm and asset manager. From 1994 to 1998 he served as President, Chief Executive Officer and director of PacifiCorp, a holding company of diversified businesses, including an electric utility, based in Portland, Oregon. He also served as President of Consumers Energy Co., from 1988 to 1994 and its Chief Executive Officer starting in 1992.
Buckman is Chairman of the Boards of SPG Solar, Smartwire Grid and Gradient Resources. He is a director of General Fusion, Soloman Corporation and Stancorp Financial Group, and is a past director of PacifiCorp, Quanta Services, Celerity Energy, MMC Energy, InfraSource, NxtPhase and Terra Systems.
Buckman holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Michigan and received his PhD in Nuclear Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also attended Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program. He currently serves as an adjunct professor in the department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan.
